FIU Wertheim Concert Hall, 10910 SW 17th St., Miami, FL 33199

Trenton Doyle Hancock: I Made a Mound City in Miami Dade County

Monday, November 18 from 6 to 7:30 PM
Locust Projects, 3852 North Miami Avenue, Miami, FL

Program: Internationally-acclaimed, Houston-based artist Trenton Doyle Hancock shows his first project since opening his major survey at MASSMOCA earlier in the spring.  At the age of 10, Hancock invented Torpedo Boy — an alter ego/superhero he still works with today. Through paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, video and installation Hancock tells the story of the Mounds (gentle hybrid plant-like creatures protected by Torpedo Boy), and their enemies, the Vegans (mutants who consume tofu and spill Mound blood every chance they get). Hancock’s narratives explore good and evil, authority, race, class, moral relativism, politics and religion, creating a truly unique body of visual art referencing artists such as Philip Guston and Henry Darger, while unapologetically nodding to comic books, illustration, animation, horror films, and toys.

The heroic adventures of Torpedo Boy and his battles in the Moundverse continue at Locust Projects with a new site-specific installation. At Locust, FAN members will enter through an apparent commercial toy store where slickly packaged dolls of infant versions of Moundverse characters are on display, before entering the main space where the ceiling-high looming figure of The Legend, the original Mound #1, sits surrounded by the first pages of drawings from Hancock's forthcoming 400-page graphic novel. Painting, videos, animations and a pop-up comic book store in the Project Room are also featured.

The artist will be in attendance to greet members and to discuss the installation. Due to the physical space, we regret that we must limit attendance to 50 participants.
FAN Member Reservations will be honored before guests

About Trenton Doyle Hancock:  Hancock was featured in the 2000 and 2002 Whitney Biennial exhibitions, becoming one of the youngest artists in history to participate in this prestigious survey. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the MoCA, North Miami; and ICA at the University of Pennsylvania.

About Locust Projects: Founded by artists for artists in 1998, Locust Projects is Miami’s longest running nonprofit alternative art space. It produces, presents, and nurtures ambitious and experimental new art and the exchange of ideas through commissioned exhibitions and projects, artist residencies, summer art intensives for teens, and public programs on contemporary art and curatorial practice.

    Cost: Free

Parking: There is a small lot behind the building and street parking can be found nearby.  In addition, there are the City View Garage at 3800 NE 1st Avenue and the Palm Court Garage at 165 NE 38th Street (accessible via 38th Court).

Dinner: There are many options for dinner within a few blocks of Locust Projects.  Please make your own reservations if you choose to eat in the area.
